Why is my Yahoo Messenger lagging so bad when I chat?

I am on a Mac Air and installed Yahoo Messenger. When talk to someone, the typing part is fine, but after I press enter, it has like a 2 second delay before the message gets submitted. When you type within the lag frame nothing happens until the lag finishes then your message gets typed up after the lag. I'm in the brink of madness. What is this lag???
