What would cause inside elevator doors to fall off their track? improper install, excess use, weight, etc?

my friends were using a elevator, on their way down to lobby floor. When they got to ground floor and the doors opened, they fell and hit my friend. Now, the building claims its my friends fault, the doors fell off track, not something mechanical.
